From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Demi Moore has alleged she was raped by a man who then paid her mother $500 (£402), when she was 15 years old.

The actor makes the claim in her forthcoming memoir, Inside Out, which was discussed in a segment on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer.

In a voiceover, Sawyer explains that Moore was “taken by her mother to bars, so men would notice them. She’s 15 when she comes home one night and an older man they know is in the apartment with the key”.

“[Moore] writes, ‘It was rape and it was betrayal,’” Sawyer reveals in the GMA segment. The man allegedly then asked Moore: “How does it feel to be whored by your mother for $500?”

After the clip was played, Sawyer asked Moore if she believed her mother had “sold” her.

“I think, in my deep heart, no. I don’t think it was a straightforward transaction,” Moore answered. “But she still did give him the access. And put me in harm’s way.”

In the interview, Moore and Sawyer also touched on the actor’s mother’s multiple suicide attempts, which she spoke about earlier this month with Lena Dunham in Harper’s Bazaar magazine.

Inside Out is released on 24 September.
