Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has thrown doubt over whether the long-gestating X-Force film will actually happen.

Following the success of the Ryan Reynolds Merc with a Mouth, a spin-off about the spin-off superhero squad seemed more likely than ever.

However, with Fox – the studio behind Deadpool and the X-Men series – having been bought by Disney (owners of Marvel Studios), chances of an X-Force film have diminished signifigantly.

Reports have recently been circulting that the previously announced Gambit film – which was set to star Channing Tatum – and Doctor Doom have been cancelled.

Posting on Twitter, Liefield wrote: “Pour one out for ol’ X-Force. Victim of the merger. $800 million grosser easy.”

A version of the X-Force debuted in Deadpool 2, featuring Zazi Beetz as Domino, Terry Crews as Bedlam, Lewis Tan as Shatterstar and Bill Skarsgård as Zeitgeist.

There are still two X-Men films, both of which have already been filmed, currently en route to cinemas: X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants. Both were expected to debut in cinemas last year but were delayed until 2019 following the Disney merger.

At what point Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige will incoporate the characters from the X-Men and Fantastic Four series remains unknown, although the producer has said they will likely be fighting side-by-side with the Avengers very soon.
