Warner Bros set the date for 17 July 2020, in an announcement that said the project will be also be released in IMAX. No other details were given.
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan tends to favour mid-July release dates. Of the filmmaker’s last five movies, four have opened at that time, including 2008's The Dark Knight, 2010's Inception, 2012's The Dark Knight Rises and Dunkirk. Interstellar was the exception, and opened in November in 2014.
17 July was the same date Nolan’s last project Dunkirk was released, in 2017. The World War Two drama recounted the 1940 rescue of 340,000 Allied troops trapped by the Nazis.
The film received eight Oscar nominations, including best picture for Nolan and producing partner Emma Thomas and director for Nolan.
The Independent gave Dunkirk five stars, praising Nolan’s vision, the cast performance, and the soundtrack by Nolan’s longtime collaborator Hans Zimmer.
“What the film demonstrates is the director’s Stanley Kubrick-like drive and perfectionism,” the review said. “It is made in hyper-realistic fashion and with such intensity that it leaves most other recent Second World War movies looking insipid by comparison.”
Nolan was awarded a CBE for his contributions to film in 2018.
