The Call of Duty series; every year, Activision pump out another first-person shooter, basically re-skinning their last instalment and adding new weapons of destruction.
Being one of the biggest, if not the biggest, gaming franchise in recent years, it’s surprising just how long Hollywood has taken to snatch up the property especially considering Hitman, Resident Evil, Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft all have film adaptations.
Soon, though, Call of Duty will no longer just be a video game. In an interview with The Guardian, Activision-Blizzard Studios co-presidents, Stacey Sher and Nick van Djk, revealed a film adaptation is being developed.
However, the studio is not just discussing one Call of Duty film, but multiple instalments, one that would look to Marvel’s tentpole Cinematic Universe for inspiration.
"We have plotted out many years,” Sher told the publication. “We put together this group of writers to talk about where we were going. There’ll be a film that feels more like Black Ops, the story behind the story. The Modern Warfare series looks at what it’s like to fight a war with the eyes of the world on you. And then maybe something that is more of a hybrid, where you are looking at private, covert operations, while a public operation is going on.”
Van Dyke said of the series: “It’s going to have the same sort of high-adrenaline, high-energy aesthetic as the game, but it’s not a literal adaptation. It’s a much more broad and inclusive, global in scope ... a big, tentpole Marvel-esque movie.”
Both co-presidents of Activision Blizzard Studios have some impressive credentials, boding well for the Call of Duty series. Sher previously produced Quentin Tarantino The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained, and Pulp Fiction, while Nick Van Dyke helped broker the deal between Marvel and Disney.
So, there we have it, another potential Cinematic Universe to file alongside Marvel, DC, the X-Men, Universal’s Monsters, King Kong v Godzilla, and Cloverfield. Come on, keep up.
