Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The British Independent Film Awards have named Andrea Arnold's dizzying US road movie American Honey as the best British independent film of 2016, in an awards ceremony which celebrated some of the very best the industry has to offer.

American Honey also saw awards for Arnold herself, star Sasha Lane, and cinematographer Robbie Ryan; with Ken Loach's stirring benefits drama I, Daniel Blake seeing wins amongst the acting categories.

The night also proved strong for debut films: Babak Anvari's horror Under the Shadow picked up multiple awards, alongside Rachel Tunnard's Adult Life Skills and Jim Hosking's The Greasy Strangler.

International fare also received a shoutout, with Barry Jenkins' Moonlight (an Oscar favourite) beating out the likes of Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Manchester by the Sea, Mustang, and Toni Erdmann.

Unfortunately, the awards tend to have zero impact on the Oscar race, so American Honey's big win here isn't necessarily going to translate to further success down the line; particularly since the freewheeling, lyrical film is still considered something of an outsider in the main awards race.
