Everyone's favourite singleton is back; though the new trailer for Bridget Jones's Baby also puts the spotlight on a newcomer to the franchise, with the delightful Emma Thompson joining as Jones' wonderfully dry, yet supportive, doctor.
Shot in London last year, it's the third entry into the beloved Brit franchise; following the 2001 original, and 2004's Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. Colin Firth will reprise his role as Mark Darcy, with Grey's Antatomy's Patrick Dempsey coming on board as love rival and suave billionaire Mark Qwant.
The film will see Jones on the hunt to discover which of these two desirable matches is the father to her unborn child; working on similar mechanics to the earlier films, with Dempsey filling in for a now-absent Hugh Grant, who played the seedy Daniel Cleaver in the two previous films. Who the eventual father turns out to be is a fact not even the cast and crew have any knowledge of, as three different endings were filmed in a bid to avoid potential plot leaks.
Though there has been some concern that Zellweger's lack of weight gain for the role is an inauthentic move away from the character's core relatability, director Sharon Maguire has stated the change is merely a reflection of where Jones is in her life; "we all really loved the notion that Bridget, 15 years on, had finally reached her ideal weight… somewhere between a UK size 10 or 12… but still hadn’t solved any of her issues about love and loneliness."
Directed by Sharon Maguire, the film takes its basis from the columns author Helen Fielding wrote for The Independent between 2005 and 2006.
Bridget Jones's Baby hits UK cinemas 16 September.
