From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. You know Disney's acquired an absolute monopoly on cinema when it's a shock the studio's managed to top its own record.
Apparently, Emma Watson creeping on a rose is of more interest to the general public than space battles and the Millenium Falcon; with the first teaser for Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast breaking the record as the trailer most viewed in its first 24 hours.
The teaser garnered an enviable 91.8M views in its first day of release (via The Hollywood Reporter); beating previous record holder Star Wars: The Force Awakens, whose first teaser topped 88M views in its first 24 hours. It also beats the now third place contender, the 61M views for Captain America: Civil War .
Which, you may notice, are three properties all owned by Disney; so it's good news either way for them, really. However, Beauty and the Beast's teaser success may boost the studio's confidence in what is potentially a risky move; and a particularly grand test for their new obsession with live-action revamps of animated classics.
With Cinderella and Maleficent trading on fairly aged, though no less classic, properties; Beauty and the Beast's role in Disney's '90s renaissance will certainly make the film seem untouchable amongst certain circles of fans.
The teaser reveals little on that front, though it will certainly whet the public's appetite for the Bill Condon live-action musical; starring Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the Beast, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Sir Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, Luke Evans as Gaston, and Josh Gad as Lefou.
Beauty and the Beast hits UK cinemas 17 March 2017.
