Marvel has spent a record amount on the promotional campaign for Avengers: Endgame.

The studio has reportedly spent an estimated $200 million (£153.5 million) on marketing for the Infinity War sequel.

That’s the biggest promotional campaign in Marvel Studio’s history, according to Deadline, beating Avengers: Infinity War (at $150 million), Spider-Man: Homecoming ($140 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 ($80 million).

“As our fan universe expands with new characters and stories, so has our audience,” Mindy Hamilton, SVP of Partnership Marketing at the Walt Disney Company, who own Marvel Studios, said.

“We’ve grown beyond our target audience of traditional fanboys; now it’s millennials, it’s teens, it’s multicultural and families. We look for partnerships that honour and celebrate in each of these.”

Previous reports have indicated that Marvel spent $1 billion (£767.8 million) on producing both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. They were both filmed at the same time in shooting locations around the world.

Although so much money has been spent preventing spoilers from leaking out, four minutes of footage reportedly leaked online earlier this week.

The directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, responded with a letter, asking fans to not “spoil it for others, the same way you wouldn’t want it spoiled for you”.

Endgame was shrouded in so much secrecy that journalists weren’t permitted to see the film ahead of interviewing its many cast members, including Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans, in the run-up to its release.

That didn’t stop Karen Gillan from revealing a bit too much about Nebula’s storyline in the new film. “I just got really nervous and gave something away,” she said in front of a crowded audience.

Last month, the studio’s official website posted a synopsis on its website, teasing a dramatic conclusion to a tale that’s been 11 years and 22 films in the making.

“The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.”

Anticipation for Endgame remains at fever pitch, with some opening night tickets to the film are being sold on eBay for upwards of $10,000 in the US.

Endgame reaches UK cinemas 25 April.
