Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. When MGM delayed new James Bond film No Time to Die from April 2020 to November of that same year, it was groundbreaking news. At the time, a studio making the decision to cancel its biggest film’s theatrical release due to a pandemic was simply a huge surprise.
Almost one year on, these delays have distressingly become the norm.
With cinemas across the world either closed or open with health and safety restrictions because of Covid-19, distributors are having to rethink film release strategies in a big way. While some – namely Paramount – decided to immediately delay key 2020 releases by an entire year, others were more hopeful that they would be able to release one of the first new films after cinemas reopened.
It didn’t exactly pan out this way. Warner Bros proceeded with Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, but Disney opted to release both its live-action remake of Mulan and latest Pixar film Soul on streaming service Disney+.,
Other high-profile films that had their release dates shifted from summer 2020 to the winter were then pushed back to this summer meaning that, in some cases, audiences will have had to wait more than a year to see them.
It’s quite hard to keep up with every delay, so we have compiled a comprehensive list of all the films with their original release dates, and – where it has been announced – when you can now expect to see them in UK cinemas.
NB: This list does not include the films that were originally scheduled to be released on VOD or streaming services.
