Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Ansel Elgort used a nude photo to help raise thousands of dollars for medical professionals during the coronavirus pandemic.
On Tuesday, the Baby Driver star sent fans wild as he shared the professionally shot picture to his Instagram, captioning the post: “OnlyFans LINK IN BIO.”
While Elgort referenced the subscription service often used by adult performers to sell naked photos or homemade pornography, the link in his bio actually sent fans to a GoFundMe set up by fellow actor Jeffrey Wright.
The fundraising page is raising money for keyworkers on the frontline in the battle against coronavirus at a selection of hospitals and medical centres across New York.
In the hours before Instagram took the picture down for inappropriate content, thousands of dollars were donated to the page, with the current total sitting above $211,000 (£185,000).
Thanking donors on his Instagram Story, Elgort said: “Hey you guys, I just wanted to say thanks so much, look how much everybody’s raised.”
“I don’t know how much is from the post, but it seems like a lot of people have been giving in the last few hours. So thanks a lot, looks like it was worth it.”
