Alive: Trailer for new South Korean zombie thriller has landed

Plot follows city infected by mysterious virus

The trailer for South Korea’s newest horrifying zombie thriller, Alive, dropped on Monday.

The film, which follows the lives of two protagonists in a zombie apocalypse, is directed by Cho Il-hyung, and adapted from the screenplay of Hollywood screenwriter Matt Naylor titled #Alone.

The trailer shows one of the film’s protagonist’s running from fear-inducing living corpses in a catastrophe ridden city.

Alive is set to be released in June this year, but the manner of its release is yet to be announced.

A synopsis for the film says the plot revolves around a metropolis that “is infected by a mysterious virus, which causes the city to spiral out of control”.

“Joon-Woo (Yoo Ah-In) and Yoo-Bin (Park Shin-Hye) struggle to survive in an isolated apartment complex from those infected with the virus. Everything including the Internet, phone, and electricity has been disconnected around the apartment,” the synopsis reads.

It is not the first zombie thriller to have taken Korean cinema by storm in recent years, with Train to Busan in 2016 becoming a smash hit which earned more than $92m globally.

The 2016 film tells the story of a man and his daughter trapped in a zombie outbreak in South Korea after boarding a train to Busan to see the man's wife.

A follow-up to Train to Busan is due to be released this year called Peninsula, set four years after the zombie outbreak in the original film. While the sequel shares the same fictional world, it is not a continuation of the original narrative.

Last year, the South Korean film Parasite won the Oscar for best picture last year, becoming the first foreign-language film ever to do so.
