Adam Sandler issued a message to his critics at a Hollywood awards ceremony.
The actor, who has received acclaim for his role in new film Uncut Gems, was presenting its directors – Josh and Benny Safdie – with a prize at New York Film Critics Circle when he referenced the deluge of negative reviews he has received throughout his career.
“All you critics, I know what you have said about me over the years,” he said, adding: “It’s fine. I have two words to say to you: you’re mean!”
Acknowledging Uncut Gems‘ positive reviews, he said: “I can’t thank these guys enough for getting critics to say something nice about me for the first time in 30 f***ing years.”
His five-minute monologue is said to have had the audience, including directors Martin Scorsese and Bong Joon-ho, in stitches.
“The more I got to know the Safdies, the more I learned they did have some similarities,” he said, quipping: “They both enjoy writing and editing movies that make you want to text your therapist and say, ‘I need an appointment right f***ing now! Help me! Help me!’”
Sandler stars in Uncut Gems as a jeweller who makes a high-stakes bet that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime. The Independent praised Sandler’s performance, saying it was “the best of his career”.
Sandler is in the running to land a Best Actor nomination at this year’s Oscars despite missing out on getting recognised at the Golden Globes. He previously received acclaim for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch Drunk Love and Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).
The 2020 Oscar nominations will be announced on Monday (13 January).
Uncut Gems will be released in UK cinemas on 10 January and on Netflix from 31 January.
