Cindy Amass and Jacqueline Cox claim they were asked to leave a 6pm screening of the comedy at London’s Vue Islington after staff’s request that they “laugh on the inside” was not adhered to.
The grandmothers, who describe themselves as being “just like” Patsy and Eddie, told the Mirror that they were “devastated” by the “really embarrassing” incident, especially as the film is meant to be funny. Cox’s daughter had bought the pair the tickets so that Amass could have an enjoyable day out following a heart attack. They allege that two young men were also ejected from the film for “making too much noise”. The four cinema-goers were given full refunds and ended up in a pub together.
A spokeswoman for Vue Cinemas told The Independent that they would “never ask customers to leave for laughing”.
“We love seeing our customers enjoy their big screen experience at Vue,” she said. “However in this instance we had a number of complaints about some customers talking too loudly during this film which was disrupting the viewing experience for the majority of customers in the screen. We would never ask our customers to leave for laughing.”
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, starring Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders in their iconic roles, scored the highest UK opening since James Bond movie Spectre when it grossed £4.4 million last weekend.
