Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe are all reprising their roles from the original, with John Krasinski returning to the director’s chair.
Details regarding the film, which looks to shoot this summer, are light on the ground, but The Hollywood Reporter notes that Murphy will play “a man with mysterious intentions who joins the family unit”.
Murphy can next be seen on screens reprising his role as Tommy Shelby in the BBC series Peaky Blinders.
The actor will later appear in Luc Besson’s thriller Anna, co-starring alongside Helen Mirren, Luke Evans and the Russian supermodel Sashsa Luss.
A Quiet Place was a surprise runaway hit last year, grossing $340 million (£260 million) at the worldwide box office from a $17 million (£13 million) budget.
The sequel will reach cinemas 15 March 2020. No other casting details have yet been announced.
