The Broadway musical based on Green Day's 2004 Grammy-winning concept album, American Idiot, will be made into a film, The Hollywood Reporter announced on April 12.

The rock opera album, which has sold more than 14 million copies worldwide, tells the tale of three characters: the aimless anti-hero Jesus of Suburbia, rock freedom fighter St. Jimmy and rebellious Whatsername. The story revolves around the idea of following one's beliefs.

Michael Mayer, the Tony Award-winning director of Spring Awakening and the co-writer and director of the stage production of American Idiot, is set to direct the film.

Mayer's directorial debut was 2004's A Home at the End of the World, starring Colin Farrell and Robin Wright Penn. He has also created Uncle Vanya, 'night, Mother and Thoroughly Modern Millie in London.

The post-punk trio's frontman Billie Joe Armstrong appeared in the play on Broadway. There is no confirmation if he or other band members will appear in the movie.

The band will produce with actor Tom Hanks. Dustin Lance Black ( Milk) is in discussion to write the screenplay.

Universal Studios, which also produced Mamma Mia!, the ABBA musical that moved successfully from play to film, is working on obtaining the film rights.
