The 48th annual New York Film Festival announced Thursday that The Social Network aka the Facebook movie has been selected to kick off the 17-day event spotlighting top filmmakers on opening night, September 24.
"It's exceptionally rare to discover a film that so powerfully captures the spirit of its time," stated Richard Peña, the Program Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center in the announcement about scheduling its world premiere at the festival.
Directed by David Fincher ( Fight Club) from a screenplay by Aaron Sorkin ( The West Wing), The Social Network stars Jesse Eisenberg ( Zombieland), Andrew Garfield, the new Spider-Man, and Justin Timberlake. A new teaser trailer was also released Thursday.
Set to be released October 1, the film is based on the book 'The Accidental Billionaires' by Ben Mezrich, recounting the story of the founding of Facebook in 2003 by Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin, Harvard undergrad students.
The second trailer released yesterday is created as a live chat on Facebook, continuing the film's unconventional marketing approach. With faces of the actors as icons, Eisenberg is shown as Zuckerberg and Saverin as Garfield.
Online conversations unfold revealing the storyline with heated exchanges between the founders, moving at breakneck speed and ensuring repeat viewing.
