From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The second trailer for the American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, an adaptation of the first novel in Stieg Larsson's best-selling Millennium trilogy, is a nearly four-minute preview released September 23.

This version from director David Fincher ( A Social Network, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), stars Daniel Craig ( Casino Royale), Rooney Mara ( The Social Network), Christopher Plummer ( The Last Station) and Stellan Skarsgard ( Thor). It follows the hit Swedish film adaptation released in 2009.

After the stylish montage of images in the teaser trailer previously released, this footage fills out the storyline. It reveals the backstory of journalist Mikael Blomkvist in his search for a wealthy young woman who has been missing for 40 years - or her murderer.

It also shows how he came to work with Lisbeth Salander, the young punk computer hacker played by Rooney Mara (and portrayed by Noomi Rapace in the Swedish film), and how they uncover crime and corruption.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo also features Robin Wright, Joely Richardson and Julian Sands.

The soundtrack and score is by Nine-Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who won the Oscar for Fincher's The Social Network.

The film hits theaters on December 21 in North America, Scandinavian countries and Singapore, then the UK on December 26, followed by Hong Kong, France, Germany and more markets in January, and Japan in February.
