Lord Richard Attenborough has been remembered today as one of the most influential and inspiration figures in the British film world.

The 90-year-old, who died at lunchtime on Sunday, was one of Britain’s leading actors during the middle of the 20th century before becoming a highly successful director.

His best known films as an actor include Jurassic Park, Brighton Rock and The Great Escape.

In the director’s chair, his most acclaimed film was the epic Gandhi, which won two Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director in 1983.

His other films include the historical World War II film A Bridge Too Far (1977), a big screen adaptation of Brodway’s A Chorus Line (1985) and Chaplin (1992), which starred Robert Downey Jr as the famous comedian.
