Leonardo DiCaprio deserves to win an Oscar after four unfruitful nominations. Or at least, that's what the internet thinks.

Google can analyse worldwide trends to reveal the most popular names in search traffic, which could to some degree predict which actors might leave with the goods.

As the ceremony draws closer, searches related to the Academy Awards have rocketed.

Take a look at some of the most-searched nominees of the past 30 days to see who the world wants to win.

Best Actor

Leonardo DiCaprio is the web’s favourite to take home the golden statuette despite past disappointments for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator and Blood Diamond.

He has proved more popular in Google searches over the past month, and in fact the past year, than his competitors: Dallas Buyers Club’s hotly-tipped Matthew McConaughey, American Hustle’s Christian Bale, 12 Years a Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nebraska’s Bruce Dern.

McConaughey is creeping up on DiCaprio though, just over-taking him earlier this week.

Best Actress

The Best Actress race has been more closely fought in terms of Google’s search trends this year, with different nominees jumping into the lead at various points over the past 30 days.

Overall, average interest leans towards Sandra Bullock, who is estimated to earn £42 million for her performance in Gravity, but American Hustle’s Amy Adams is hot on her tail, as are Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett.

Blanchett is the bookie’s favourite to win the golden statuette for her role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, but she only surpassed the other nominees in search traffic after winning at the Baftas on 16 February.

Sandra Bullock leads the way in the most closely-fought category

Best Supporting Actor

If internet popularity has anything to do with it, the Dallas Buyers Club’s men might well take home both acting awards. Jared Leto’s supporting performance as trans-woman Rayon won him the most worldwide Google searches by a mile, bar on the post-Baftas Tuesday when American Hustle’s Bradley Cooper hit a popularity peak.

Cooper is a closer rival to Leto in the US, while in the UK the nominees are in more equal competition with each other.

Despite winning at the Baftas, Captain Phillips newcomer Barkhad Abdi has garnered the least attention, falling a fair way behind The Wolf of Wall Street’s Jonah Hill and 12 Years a Slave’s Michael Fassbender.

Best Supporting Actress

One name rings out loud and clear in the Google search trends for Best Supporting Actress – Miss Jennifer Lawrence.

The American Hustle actress, who won an Oscar in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook, is the runaway favourite as far as the internet is concerned. Only Julia Roberts, nominated for August: Osage County, is posing some sort of popularity competition for Lawrence.

12 Years a Slave newcomer Lupita Nyong'o, who won the Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice Awards for her performance as gutsy slave Patsey, has received next to no Google attention in comparison, despite being a hot contender for the Oscar.

Blue Jasmine’s Sally Hawkins and Nebraska’s June Squibb have also been overlooked by Google searchers in the past 30 days.
