From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The stars flocked to the Dolby Theater's red carpet for the 86th Academy Awards, with a range of outfits displayed - from a safely-dressed Amy Adams (navy, a somewhat dull choice) to the electric blue sack chosen by Liza Minnelli.

As anticipated, Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o stunned with a pale blue plunging gown to reinforce her status as Queen of the Red Carpet. She was joined by 12 Years A Slave co-star Chiwetel Ejiofor and the drama's British director Steve McQueen.

Pharrell Williams left his famous Grammy Awards hat at home in favour of a suit...with shorts, while Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch appeared looking suave as ever.

Jared Leto ditched the black for a flashy white tuxedo complete with shiny red bow tie as he claimed the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

The real Philomena Lee opted for a bright, coral number as she arrived to cheer on British film Philomena, based on her life. Judi Dench, who plays her in the movie, was nominated for Best Actress alongside Gravity's Sandra Bullock and the winner Cate Blanchett.

Blanchett opted for a sparkling flesh-coloured dress adorned with giant silver sequins.

Jennifer Lawrence arrived fashionably late after Twitter was overtaken with cries of "Where is she?" only to trip on the red carpet before the ceremony had even begun.
