Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

TO mark the release of In Custody, Ismail Merchant's first film as director, the Independent, Air India and the ITC Welcome Group offer a week's holiday for two in India.

The prize consists of two round-trip economy class tickets London / Delhi with Air India, which operates 11 daily non-stop flights between the UK and India. The winners then spend two nights at the Maurya Sheraton in New Delhi, two nights at the Mughal Sheraton in Agra, two nights at the Rajputana Palace Sheraton in Jaipur and one night back in New Delhi. The holiday must be taken before March 1995, except between November and February.

To enter, answer these three questions. 1) What is the name of the writer of In Custody? 2) What is the language of the degenerate poet in the story? 3) For which director does Merchant regularly produce? Answers, on a postcard and by 22 June, to In Custody competition, Daily Arts, The Independent, 40 City Rd, London EC1Y 2DB. In Custody continues in London at the Minema until next Friday.
