Your support helps us to tell the story

This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Help us keep bring these critical stories to light. Your support makes all the difference.

As Christmas hurtles towards us and the weather turns colder, the enterprising people at the National Trust are hosting nationwide events to cater for both eventualities. In Cumbria there's a wildlife workshop where participants can make their own birdboxes and feeding tables - wardens will be on hand to help (St Catherine's Base, Windermere, 11 Dec, 2-5pm).

At Dunham Massey Hall in Cheshire, meanwhile, there is a chance to experience old seasonal traditions and make your own Christmas pudding and pomander (0161-928 4351, 13 and 14 Dec, 1.45-3.30pm). Booking is advised for both events.
