Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

hi clarissa. god, it's such a relief to be back in england
From ClarissaH@greatestates.co.uk
what on earth are u talking about u ungrateful cow? u've just been taken to paris, the most romantic place on the planet earth
From annahowe
not if u r there the same time as tony blair. might as well have gone to clacton. all these gorgeous french waiters were not in the least interested in chatting me up. straight ones wanted to know if i'd ever been to downing street and the gay ones where cherie gets her saris from.
From ClarissaH
what did david think?
From annahowe
o god this is the most shocking of the lot. he watched blair on tv and it was like he'd seen a vision. says he's joining the labour party and kept on talking about duty and the new contract. i only got to go on a boat trip down the seine by saying frank field had assured me it was duty of citizens to take up opportunities and we wd not be putting a burden on the state. even then he spent all his time mulling over compulsory second pensions.
From ClarissaH
i keep on meaning to get round to that. maybe david cd sort out my pension at the same time.
From annahowe
u'll be lucky. we all have to accept responsibility for ourselves. i asked him to go out and get some milk and he said i had to end my culture of dependency.
anyway how about u?
From ClarissaH
well walked into the smoking room at work yesterday to hear martina saying "...and then she went bright red, i've a good mind to ring up his wife and tell her....oh hello clarissa." then she and emma got up and left.
so hated bossman solmes is spreading it round the office i wanted to have an affair with him. fantastic. the only good thing is he's keeping away from me as if i was a nasty rash and summons martina in instead.
From annahowe
but what happened when rob came round last week?
From ClarissaH
the doorbell rang and i didnt know what to do so i hid in my room.
From annahowe
glad to see those assertiveness courses weren't in vain then
From ClarissaH
ha ha very funny. of course once i went in there i was trapped. tried to listen to the wall to see if i cd hear what they were saying eg rob confessing undying love for me. sounded very much however as if they were talking about jon's band called spew.
From annahowe why didnt u just go out?
From ClarissaH
becos, dummy, then i wd have to admit i was hiding. hoped they wd go down the pub.
From annahowe
clarissa, why do u make life so complicated?
From ClarissaH
me? its not my fault. if anything it's my mother's
From annahowe
o god u haven't been reading freud for beginners again have u?
From ClarissaH
no what i meant was she chose that evening to ring me up and jon, instead of being loyal flatmate, yelled "it's ok mrs h, she's hiding in her room. i'll go and get her." came out to get the phone and had to endure my mother going on about what a nice boy jon was and how polite and had i thought what jim and i were going to get for granny's 80th birthday yet. before i cd draw breath she said she knew granny wd love a pic of the two of us so cd i arrange it. meanwhile rob is looking at me as if i'm mrs mad from madsville
From annahowe
well it's understandable
From ClarissaH
it gets worse. got off the phone and we stared at one another. jon taking advantage of me talking to my mum had nipped out from some rizlas. rob cleared his throat and said "clarissa i'd like to get something sorted about anna's party"
From annahowe
what??????
From ClarissaH
"i was v drunk," he said. "and i'm sorry for all the trouble i've caused u. i wdn't have behaved so stupidly if i hadn't been off my face." "o thank u so much," i replied. "glad to know u wdn't have come near me if u were sober. how kind." "I didn't mean that -" he started to say but i stormed off. there is a msg on my desk to ring him this morning. may be the affronted damsel act worked then!!! how long before i ring him back do u think?
