Edinburgh Festival Day 1 / Independent - Traverse Conferences
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Traverse Theatre and the Independent are again joining forces to present a series of eight free conferences with major figures visiting the Edinburgh Festival. Now in their fifth year, the conferences have become established as a vital and often controversial forum for leading international artists from around the world to engage in vigorous debate with the audience and each other. This year there is a special Conference Question Time with Secretary of State for National Heritage, the Right Hon David Mellor QC, MP in the company of Andreas Whittam-Smith, editor of the Independent. Also this year three conferences focus on the theatrical tradition and recent developments in new writing in Scotland, Ireland and Catalonia. The first is on Thursday 20 August and explores the importance of contemporary Irish writing.
All Conferences are at 11am and are free, in the new Traverse Theatre, Cambridge Street, Edinburgh EH1 (031-228 1404).
