CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS (8pm Sky Cinema), one of Woody Allen's most accomplished films of recent years, skilfully interweaves light and shade. It even features the first murder to take place in an Allen movie. Darkness is provided by Martin Landau (right) as a respectable doctor who resorts to desperate measures in order to silence his mistress (Anjelica Huston) when she threatens to expose their affair. Meanwhile, Allen himself furnishes light relief with a humorous storyline about the clash between an ideological film-maker (Allen) and his more commercial TV director brother-in-law (Alan Alda).

The US Open (3.30pm Sky Sports 2), one of golf's most sought-after titles, starts today at the Pinehurst Number Two Course in North Carolina. The European challenge could be led by Lee Westwood.
