Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

In which painting by which painter can you find this sun?

Answers on a postcard, to arrive by Friday 21 May: DETAILS 433, IoS, 1 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5DL. Three winners will each receive a bottle of champagne

Details 431 came from George Caleb Bingham's Fur Trappers Descending the Missouri (c1845). European artists are good at moody solitudes, but it always feels like a day trip. Only the Americans manage absolute remoteness, isolation, the sense of being miles from anywhere. In this picture, as the trapper catches the viewer's eye with a wary gaze, he might be looking at the first stranger he's seen for ages - or perhaps just looking out, in the direction of some suspicious noise or movement. The tethered creature is not a puss, but a bear cub. The picture is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The first three correct entries came from: M Zunec-Mathieson, Hove; E Miles, London NW8; and E Bishop, London SW19
