Edinburgh Fringe 2016: Masai Graham wins best joke award

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Drum roll, please: this year’s award for funniest one-liner at the Edinburgh Festival fringe goes to… Masai Graham, for his organ-donation-themed Dad joke.

The gag? “My dad suggested I register for a donor card, he's a man after my own heart.” Feel free to use that one down the pub later.

Previous winners of the prize, which has been handed out annually for the past nine years, include Tim Vine, Zoe Lyons and Rob Auton.

Of the 2,000 people who voted on the Dave's Funniest Joke of the Fringe panel, 27% backed the joke, Graham, from West Brompton, saying of his triumph: "It's an incredible honour to land Joke of the Fringe. Not bad for someone from West Brom!”

In second place, having secured 25%, comes Stuart Mitchell, for his one-liner: "Why is it old people say 'there's no place like home', yet when you put them in one…"

Steve North, general manager of Dave, said: "The Fringe is renowned for being the best place to spot new and emerging comedy talent, and although there are some returning contenders in our top 10 this year, there is a high volume of new talent which is very exciting to see.”

The Edinburgh Fringe wraps up proceedings in just under a week, concluding on the 19 August.
