The recent renaissance of Brixton as the nocturnal destination of choice in south west London would not be complete without the re-opening of The Fridge. Over the years, the venue has played host to many seminal gigs, such as Soul II Soul and Love Muscle, catering for various elements of clubland along the way.

Coinciding with this re-opening, Knowwhere was one of the success stories of 2004. While promoters scramble around trying to duplicate the latest musical trends, Knowwhere has built a sturdy reputation on a strict diet of progressive trance beats.

It take its music seriously, but Knowwhere's irreverent approach to marketing and presentation has attracted many converts. Limiting the parties to the third Friday of each month creates a sense of occasion, too, which the DJs rise to by bringing the beats down hard and fast.

K90 and Anthony Dean DJ this Friday, with Matt Darey, Sassi and Pathfinder supporting. Not for the faint-hearted, the main room is a throwback to the birth of house music: unpretentious, uplifting and strongly tribal. Arrive around midnight for a full-on rampage.

1 Town Hall Parade, London SW2 (020-7326 5100; www.clubknowwhere.co.uk) Fri, 10pm-6am, pounds 12-pounds 16
