Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Shindig is at the Riverside Club 57-59 Melbourne St, Newcastle- Upon-Tyne, Sat 9pm-2am pounds 7 before 10pm/pounds 8 after. Info: 0191-261 4386

A recent survey revealed that young men from the north of England spend twice as much money on clothes as their southern counterparts.

Men from Newcastle spend more than any other region. The vision of scores of Geordies roaming the streets like preened peacocks grates clashes with stereotypical images of cloth caps and bottles of Newky Brown. People look to Manchester and Edinburgh as the clubbing capitals of the north, but Newcastle also boasts an impressive menu of nocturnal activity.

With a capacity of 1,200, the Riverside Club provides Newcastle's youth with four opportunities a week to dance the night away and parade the latest fashions.

Shindig, every Saturday night, features garage and house downstairs while the upper regions provide deep and hard house. Residents Scott Bradford and Scooby lead off on the decks, though punters have come to expect extra guest DJs of the highest quality.

And not a Newcastle FC shirt in sight.
