Following her previous CD of concertos by Sibelius and Prokofiev, Frang again pairs Nordic and Russian composers on this latest release, with contrasting results.
Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D is perfectly suited to a young virtuoso, combining one of his big, memorable melodies with plenty of opportunities to showcase technique and touch. The violin part of Nielsen's "Violin Concerto", by contrast, is less flamboyant and theatrical, the instrument more firmly embedded within the orchestral undergrowth, and is consequently a slight letdown after her delightful work on the Tchaikovsky.
