Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Hello. My name is John Lyttle. People call me John Lyttle. My mother took me to see a movie. The movie was Forrest Gump. My mother said I would like it because I have trouble following the plot of 'The Teddy Bears' Picnic' and Forrest Gump was very simple. She laughed when she said that and gave me one of her funny looks.
I thought Forrest Gump would be a cartoon movie. It was not. But the people in the movie were like cartoons, sort of. Particularly a man my mother said was Mr Tom Hanks and who I said was Elmer Fudd. My mother said he was the hero and the woman behind us said shut up, she was trying to watch the movie. My mother gave her one of her funny looks too.
I was confused. I thought Lieutenant Dan was the hero because he lost his legs and had the worst haircut I have ever seen. Lieutenant Dan gets a better haircut and learns to live again. He also travels to this really neat place called Peace, which sounded nicer to me than Dysentery, no, Dynasty, no, Destiny, which is where Mr Tom Hanks wanted to go. I thought Jenny was the hero too. Jenny has a very bad daddy and a boyfriend who hits her. She dies after marrying Mr Tom Hanks, which I thought was taking the easy way out, but she visits Peace too. Jenny learns. Lieutenant Dan learns. Mr Tom Hanks does not learn. Everyone says learning is important. So why is Mr Tom Hanks the hero? My mother said I didn't get it. My mother also says Keanu Reeves will get an Oscar for best actor some day. Stupid is as stupid does.
