Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. This weekend, the PCA world championship between Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand will have its formal opening in New York. The first game will be played on Monday, and hostilities continue for five weeks with a maximum of 20 games.
If you cannot wait for the next day's Independent, the moves will be carried, with half-hourly updates, on Channel 4 teletext, or super-highwaymen may follow them almost live on the Internet chess club.
Kasparov is certainly taking the threat to his title seriously, as he showed by missing the Intel Grand Prix in London last weekend in order to acclimatise himself to New York.
Anand preferred to get back into the swing of competition after months of preparation. He lost in the semi-finals, but not before producing this nice effort. Black's 13th move (see diagram) sets problems, since 14.Nb3 loses to 14...Bxf2+ 15.Kxf2 Nfg4+, but 14.Na4? was not the answer. After 14...Bg4! White was lost. 15.f3 Bxf3! 16.gxf3 Bxd4+ wins everything for Black.
