Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. It started last year with The Verve and Oasis wearing Clarks desert boots and lace-up schoolteacher shoes, both part of their Originals range. Pop endorsement has seen Originals elevated to cult status; they are now sold alongside trainers in fashionable urban hangouts. Next for the Clarks make-over treatment are their women's shoes. The Spice Girls and Kylie Minogue aren't swanning around in them yet, but women who can't afford to spend pounds 100 and more for well-made, classic shoes will welcome them.
The range, Modern Classics, is a small one, with knee-high boots, stack- heeled ankle boots, fabulous loafers (which come in black and chocolate brown and cost only pounds 35) and the two-tone court shoes featured here. They are also available in navy and black in addition to this champagne/ chocolate combination.
Clarks still hold childhood memories for those of us with sensible parents, and thankfully the comfort and workmanship of their kids' shoes are still part of the adult package. This range, the Originals, and another called The Collection, which is slightly more expensive, are all part of a relaunch for Clarks, which is trying to attract young customers back into the fold by focusing these particular ranges to fashion-aware consumers. Shops are getting a new modern look, too, starting with Newcastle, Birmingham, Cirencester and Bath.
