More than other book adaptations of successful Radio 4 series, James Naughtie's "Journey with Notes" is handicapped by the lack of sound. A point that hits home when accompanied by Wagnerian overtures is much harder to illustrate in words. Still, if Naughtie's intelligent account of the history of music does anything it is to make the reader want to hear more, which can't be all bad.
