Cover Stories: Silver Moon co-founder dies; Lauren Bacall's memoirs; Max Clifford's autobiography

There's great sadness this week following the death at far too young an age of Sue Butterworth, co-founder of Silver Moon Women's Bookshop. An irrepressible force with the timing of a stand-up comedian, Butterworth had the quickest of wits and kindest of hearts, and spent a good deal of time and energy working for the good of the trade. Having begun in publishing, she joined with Jane Cholmeley to create the biggest women's bookshop in Europe. The shop was a Mecca for women who wanted not only books but advice. When rent hikes squeezed them out of Charing Cross Road, Silver Moon found a new home at Foyles, much to Butterworth's delight.

* These days, with celebrity memoirs a dime a dozen, very few such events are memorable. But ask anyone who's been around the trade about Lauren Bacall, and they'll have an anecdote or two. In 1976, By Myself was a superseller and, to mark her 80th birthday, the actress is writing an update. By Myself... and Then Some, due from Headline in spring 2005, will pick up where the first book left off. She will be out and about in support of the memoirs, no doubt with her beloved pooch, Sophie.

* It's a marriage made in heaven. Publicist Max Clifford has signed with Virgin Books for his autobiography, to be written with journalist Angela Levin. Virgin chairman Sir Richard Branson praises a man involved in "virtually every scoop and scandal over the last decade". If they're not careful, they may both float away on a cloud of hot air.
