The curiously named Mock Turtle , 34 High West Street, Dorchester (01305 264011), is a family establishment. Starters, at pounds 4.50, include crab pancakes, blue cheese-stuffed mushrooms and Italian chicken livers. An excellent fish specials board, with locally caught specimens, simply cooked, is the pick of the main courses (all at pounds 13.50). Meat eaters are also well looked after. Classic desserts at pounds 3.75 round off the menu. A shorter, cheaper lunch menu offers good value. Open Tues-Fri 12-2pm, Mon-Sat from 7pm.
The Partridge family
An old coaching inn on the B526, 5 miles SE of Northampton, is the setting for the French Partridge, Horton (01604 870033). Owned by the Partridges for decades, it is a very professional, family-run affair. The kitchen produces mainly French-inspired dishes with a classy four-course fixed- price menu changing every couple of months. Choose from rabbit, pork and hazelnut terrine with spicy plum sauce or a salad of cod ceviche and prawns with crisp potato rounds to start.
Main courses include braised shoulder of lamb with couscous, roast partridge with anna potatoes or calves liver with a leek sauce. Leave room for puddings. A strong wine list. Dinner only. No credit cards. Four courses and coffee pounds 25. Open for orders Tue-Sat 7.30pm-9pm
Beetle mania
The Beetle and Wedge, Ferry Lane, Moulsford-on-Thames, Oxfordshire (01491 651381), is an elegant Thameside hotel boasting 10 bedrooms and two restaurants. The Boathouse has a riverside terrace with an informal atmosphere and menu to match. Choose from an enormous range of starters and mains - lots of game, freshly caught fish and salads - all between pounds 3.95 and pounds 15. The a la carte Dining Room offers more sophisticated fare - thinly sliced baked salmon with Ocietra caviar sauce or perhaps a saddle of venison with cabbage, fig and port wine sauce. Quality wine list. Open Tue-Sun 12.30-2pm, Tue-Sat 7.30-10. 3-course a la carte dinner, pounds 35
