Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

LOUISE BROOKS made more than 20 pictures in Europe and America during her 13-year screen career; but her reputation today is largely based on just one film: G W Pabst's 1929 silent classic Pandora's Box, or Die Busche der Pandora to give it its original German title. Brooks's portrayal of the high-class prostitute Lulu is one of the cinema's most memorable performances, and certainly one of its most erotic. With her androgynous modern looks, thick black bob and forthright attitude to sex, Lulu is as mesmerising today as when she first exposed herself to the German public more than 60 years ago. Pandora's Box is now available on video (Tartan Video, pounds 15.99), and we have 25 copies to give away to readers. To stand a chance of winning, simply answer the following question:

On whose play is Pandora's Box based?

Answers on a postcard to Pandora, Arts Desk, Independent on Sunday, 40 City Rd, London EC1Y 2DB, by Mon 29 Nov. Usual competition rules apply; the editor's decision is final.
