Pick of the week
The Cauldron
An investigation into the current state of British sculpture. The term is taken at its broadest in a landmark show including the perverted mannequins of Jake and Dinos Chapman and the assemblages of video-based darling of New British Art, Georgina Starr. Other featured artists are Angela Bullock, Christine Borland, Steven Pippin and Gillian Wearing.
Henry Moore studio, Dean Clough, Halifax (0113-234 3158) 2 June to 4 August
Richard Smith
First UK show for some time for this always interesting New York-based painter.
Bernard Jacobson, Stafford Street, W1 (0171-495 8575) 1-29 June
Edgar Degas
A new slant on the familiar work of the leading impressionist. Degas's late work is the least well-known of his ouevre, having been hidden away by the artist during his last years. As this show reveals, the work he made during the 1880s and 1890s is no less powerful than his earlier painting.
National Gallery, London, WC2 (0171-839 3321). To 26 Aug
