Observations: Be a work of art. It's not a stitch-up
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Would you like to get a job knitting in an art gallery and become a living work of art? Dubbed the Turner Prize of Russian Art, a new exhibition in London will showcase highlights of Russia's Innovatsia Prize.
Recent winners, a Russian art collective from the Siberian plains called Where the Dogs Run, are currently searching for Baboushka-style women over 65 to come and knit in the London gallery Calvert 22, where this exhibition takes place. The knitter will be employed to continue their knitting performance Knitting and Crocheting the Mandelbrot Set, which never gets finished.
The durational performance piece, which looks at ideas of infinity and age, is already 14 metres long. The selected women will be invited to follow a given pattern and be part of this performance piece, sitting among other art works.
The gallery is contacting Women's Institutes with knitting circles to find the knitters. “This is a unique project and the recruitment process has been a real challenge,” says curator Lina Dzuverovic at Calvert 22. “We have had a great response from the knitting and crocheting community in London. There are still a few slots available and we would welcome applications from all knitters or crocheters interested in becoming a piece of art.”
'The Russian Art Show: The Best of the Innovatsia Prize', Calvert 22, London E2 (www.calvert22.org) 25 Jul to 16 Sept
