Your support makes all the difference. In an interview that raised a lot of eyebrows, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said that God wanted Donald Trump to be president.
But two weeks after Sanders made the comments on the Christian Broadcasting Network, a poll by Fox News suggests that a quarter of Americans agree with her.
Yes, that’s right. The poll of 1,004 registered American voters released on Wednesday found that 25 per cent believe that God backed Trump’s presidency.
In the original interview with the Christian network, Sanders said:
I think God calls all of us to fill different roles at different times and I think that he wanted Donald Trump to become president, and that's why he's there.
The poll also revealed that among white evangelical Christians, the proportion who agree with Sanders jumps to 55 per cent. This drops to 36 per cent among Protestants and 20 per cent among Catholics.
Nearly half of Republicans – 45 per cent – compared to nine per cent of Democrats said the same.
People on Twitter had lots of thoughts about the poll.
Some wondered if many of the respondents would say the same thing about Obama.
And inevitably, there were some people who agreed that God backed Trump.
The poll, which was conducted from 10-12 February, has a margin of error of three percentage points, according to Fox News.
