A new trailer for Battlefield 3 crammed in the game's essential multiplayer features: mobile infantry, heavy armor, helicopters, high-speed jets, and - for those on PC - up to 64 players at once.

The game launches worldwide on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 during the week of October 25.

Excutive Vice-President Patrick Soderland was on stage to proclaim it "the best Battlefield experience ever."

Studio Karl-Magnus Troedsson was just as direct, and couldn't resist a pop at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, due out a fortnight later.

" Battlefield 3 is the best modern warfare experience this year," he said, before the two took on a mission in their game's co-op mode, revealed for the first time at Gamescom.

Battlefield 3 is Electronic Arts' biggest and boldest attempt at moving in on Call of Duty territory, a franchise whose previous two entries have managed to shift around 20 million copies each.

If the October's Battlefield can make even two thirds of that, it'll be doing outstandingly well against the genre's dominant brand.

That's the context for Troedsson's daring statement, and for the multiplayer trailer that closed EA's press conference.

Military personnel clashed on land and in the air within the Caspian Border map in a clip designed to show off Battlefield 3's "state of the art destruction, graphics, animation and scale."
