In 2018, the actress shared an Instagram post of an LGBT+ singer singing the lyrics to Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You with the caption: “Happy Pride month! Sending love to my fellow LGBTQ+ homies. Keep being strong in the face of adversity. Loud & proud.”
Now, in an interview with Bustle, the actress, who is dating Cory Booker, explained that despite what people thought, she hadn’t come out as a member of the LGBT+ community then - but she is now.
“People kept saying that I [came out]... I didn’t do that,” she said. “I mean, it’s not inaccurate, but I never did come out come out. I mean, I guess I am now.”
Dawson then added: “I’ve never had a relationship in that space, so it’s never felt like an authentic calling to me.”
In the interview, the 40-year-old also opened up about her relationship with Booker, whom she started dating in 2018, and what it is like dating a politician.
“It’s the first time I felt like I had to be responsible about my choice of love, which is a challenging thing to do,” she said of dating the former presidential candidate. “If you fall in love, you fall in love. But there’s another aspect I had to consider: what this meant in [putting] a microscope on my family and particularly on my daughter.
“But in each other I think we found our person.”
This is not the first time Dawson, who adopted her daughter, Isabella, in 2014, has expressed her love for Booker.
In January, the actress shared an Instagram post of the pair kissing with the caption: “My love, I’m always impressed with how you exude such grace and civility while expressing your passion and brilliance in response to these tumultuous times. I’m so grateful for your voice and dedication. Your love lifts us all up. Thank you.”
