Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Tracie Andrews, the former model who claimed her fiance was murdered by a road rage killer, was last night starting a life sentence after her story was revealed to be a pack of lies.

Andrews, 28, was found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court of killing Lee Harvey, who she stabbed 37 times with what police believe was a penknife, in the back, face, neck and chest during a roadside argument last December.

She showed no emotion as Mr Justice Buckley handed down a sentence. In the public gallery, Mr Harvey's parents, Ray and Maureen, and his sister, Michelle, gasped and burst into tears at the verdict. Mr Harvey said later: "We now feel that justice has been done, not for us but for Lee."

Lee Harvey, 25, an unemployed bus driver, died outside his car in Coopers Hill near Bromsgrove, Hereford and Worcester. During a dramatic press conference two days later, Andrews claimed that he was killed by the passenger of a dark Ford Sierra which had pursued them after a motoring row.

No murder weapon was found, but detectives discovered a bloodstain on the inside of Andrews' ankle boot that would have matched a Swiss Army- style knife that they believed was used to kill Mr Harvey.

It is thought that Andrews threw the weapon into a hospital bin during a visit to the lavatory after the attack .
