From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A RETIRED miner who stabbed an intruder at his home early yesterday and was arrested said he has no regrets about what he has done.

Terry Regan, 44, from Bolton upon Dearne, South Yorkshire, said he had come face-to-face with the intruder and had been "terrified and I grabbed hold of a knife and stabbed him in the ankle area". He added: "I realise what I have done and I would do the same again."

Mr Regan met the intruder in his kitchen while investigating a noise. The men are believed to have struggled for several minutes before the intruder suffered five stab wounds to the leg.

Chief Inspector Robin Caulfield, of South Yorkshire Police, said the intruder, who scrambled through a window to escape, called for an ambulance himself. A 23-year-old man was later arrested and was treated in hospital for leg injuries.

Mr Regan was questioned for 12 hours before being released on police bail. He could face wounding and assault charges.
