Moment: 'We'll do the deals we can do' - Arteta after missing out on Mudryk deal

Arsenal are closing in on a deal for Brighton’s Leandro Trossard after they were pipped to the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk’s Mykhailo Mudryk by Chelsea. The 28-year-old forward has fallen out with manager Roberto De Zerbi and looked likely to leave the Seagulls during this transfer window with Arsenal keen to boost their forward line. Trossard is an adaptable player and would provide cover for both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli on the wings as well as Martin Odegaard through the middle as the Gunners chase down a first Premier League title since 2004.

Up in the North East, Newcastle continue to do business and are negotiating with Nottingham Forest over a loan move for striker Chris Wood. He was one of Eddie Howe’s first signings at the club but with Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak fit again Wood may be surplus to requirements. That definitely would be the case if the Magpies are successful in signing their next target: Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Newcastle are reportedly preparing a £35million bid for the striker.

Elsewhere, West Ham have enquired to sign Danny Ings from Aston Villa with the forward undergoing a medical at the London side later today. His signing could ease the pressue on manager David Moyes who is said to be facing the axe should his team fail to beat relegation rivals Everton at the weekend.

Steve Cooper wants Jesse Lingard at Nottingham Forest ‘the longer the better’

Steve Cooper does not know how long Jesse Lingard will stay at Nottingham Forest but wants it to be as long as possible.

Lingard, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, surprised many when he opted to join newly promoted Forest on a one-year deal in the summer following his release from Manchester United.

He endured a slow start at the City Ground, but was improving before suffering an untimely injury on his return to United at the end of December.

The 30-year-old spoke about his exit from Old Trafford and how much he is enjoying life at the City Ground on the Diary of a CEO podcast this week.

Cooper hopes Lingard stays with Forest

Nottingham Forest boss, Steve Cooper, is hopeful that Jesse Lingard will extend his stay at the City Ground beyond the end of his one-year contract but admits he doesn’t know whether that will be the case.

When asked he he saw Lingard at the club for the next few years, Cooper said: “My honest answer is, I don’t know. With regards to his situation here, he is very much part of what we’re doing on and off the pitch.

“Even with the games he hasn’t played recently because of injury, you can see his engagement in the dressing room and by the side of the dugout. It’s no show – although some of his tracksuits need a mention, but that’s another matter!

“It’s just generally how he is every day. When you see him and when you don’t, he’s a very infectious, hard-working, committed lad.

“We’re really enjoying working with him. How long it will be for – the longer the better, for me. But we don’t know.

“At some stage we’re going to have to have the discussion with him. But the fact he says he’s happy and content pleases me, because that’s always what I want for a player – for their self-worth to be high, because that’s when you get the best out of them. And if we get the best out of Jesse, then we’ve got a good player.

“The main thing for Jesse at the minute is to get him back fit and playing. We’re not looking beyond that.”

He played a key role in their promotion from the Championship last season and is off interest to other top tier clubs.

Leicester City are also monitoring his situation and there is also interest from Bundesliga clubs Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool and Chelsea meet having taken very different routes to the same place

“He doesn’t wait long,” said Jurgen Klopp. “Does he want to bring the Harlem Globetrotters as well?” It was in September and the German was quick to mock Todd Boehly’s idea for a Premier League all-star game. The new Chelsea owner had made an impression on the long-serving Liverpool manager: just not a positive one.

Fast forward four months and, if such notional sides were picked on top-flight form, perhaps neither Liverpool nor Chelsea would need worry about their players being injured in a glorified exhibition match. They met in two cup finals last season. Now they face off as ninth and 10th in the Premier League. Boehly’s southern all-stars could instead feature more players from Brighton, Brentford and Fulham than the club with the biggest transfer outlay in any season in history.

The alternative interpretation is that Boehly intends every Chelsea match to be an all-star game. He has just signed the rising star of this season’s Champions League, in Mykhailo Mudryk, and tried to buy his World Cup counterpart, in Enzo Fernandez. Joao Felix, Atletico Madrid’s £100million prodigy, was supposed to be a global star.

Wolves and West Ham agree deal for Dawson

Wolves has been pushing to sign Craig Dawson since the summer transfer window and now they have agreed a £3.3m fee with West Ham to bring the experienced defender to the midlands.

Wolves’ bid for Dawson was said to have angered West Ham manager David Moyes last week as the approach came just before the sides met in the Premier League.

West Ham lost the match 1-0 and dropped into the bottom three, with Wolves jumping out of the relegation zone.

Dawson himself is keen for the move as he would like to be closer to his family who live in the midlands but the deal is not expected to go through until next week.

The 21-year-old has only made three appearances for Forest in the domestic cup competitions this season despite being part of their Championship promotion campaign last year.

Forest are also hoping to loan out striker Lyle Taylor and central-midfielder Cafu with Dale Taylor’s loan to Burton Albion nearing completion.

Spurs looking into loan deals

Tottenham have enquired about signing Nicolo Zaniolo on loan from Roma.

The left-footed attacking midfielder can play on the wing and has made 13 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side but it remains to be seen whether the Italian side would let him leave in the middle of the season.

Everton boss Frank Lampard: Southampton defeat was a reality check for us

Everton manager Frank Lampard believes the importance of team spirit and commitment has become a clearer reality for his players as their league position worsens.

Last Saturday’s home match against bottom side Southampton was the club’s biggest fixture since they escaped relegation in the penultimate game of the 2021/22 season.

Defeat means the trip to 18th-placed West Ham, only above Everton on goal difference, is now the biggest 90 minutes of the season so far, and Lampard thinks last weekend may be the wake-up call his players need.
