Chelsea booked their passage to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup on penalties after Mykhailo Mudryk’s stoppage-time equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.

Mudryk slotted home after a mistake from Kieran Trippier just as Eddie Howe’s side looked to have done enough to ease past the hosts, who struggled to create for much of the game.

Earlier, Callum Wilson had given the visitors a first-half lead on the counter-attack. But as the game went to spot-kicks, Trippier again was culpable, firing wide from 12 yards before Matt Ritchie saw the critical kick saved by goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic to see Chelsea through.

A defensive disasterclass from Chelsea and Newcastle lead through Callum Wilson!

Wilson outpaces Thiago Silva but it seems a fairly innocuous counter as the Newcastle striker is surrounded by three men. The chasing Benoit Badiashile does well to muscle in front of him but then completely scuffs the ball between his own feet as he goes to clear, it falls back to Wilson and he finds a lovely finish into the corner with the outside of his foot.

Nice work by Wilson but Badiashile has to deal with that.

10 mins: Cracking opening 10 minutes here and Newcastle have another half-chance. Bruno Guimaraes whips a cross in from the right, it deflects on to the penalty spot and Gordon is charging in to try and get there but Disasi scrambles away in the nick of time.
