England’s World Cup nightmare continued as their miniscule mathematical hopes of staying in the competition were finally extinguished by bitter rivals Australia.

After five defeats from their first six games the defending champions had long since given up hope of reaching the semi-finals, but officially bowing out at the hands of their Ashes foes with a 33-run defeat simply poured salt into open wounds.

Once again it was their batting that let them down, failing to get to grips with a manageable target after a spirited showing from the bowling unit left Australia 286 all out in the final over.

England were knocked over for 253 in response, Ben Stokes top-scoring with 64 but unable to pull his side out of the fire.

Wicket! Stokes out for 64! ct Stoinis b Zampa - England 169-5

Adam Zampa takes the wicket to change the course of the match! Stokes tried to just play that one around the corner, and has hit it straight to Stoinis at fine leg on the edge of the ring.

It is hard to think that with that England’s chances have not disappeared as well.

England 169-4 (35) Stokes 64, Ali 32, Hazlewood 0-31 (7)

Hazlewood will continue, Pat Cummins has just been urging some of his team to calm down and keep their heads as Stokes remains at the crease.

Ali has sent that to the boundary from the last ball of the over.

England 162-4 (34) Stokes 63, Ali 27, Stoinis 0-24 (3)

Ali flicks Stoinis for four to bring up the 50 partnership with Stokes. Stoinis had to come on to bowl, with Zampa not being able to after being off the field for a period of time.

He follows it up with a second four, back to back boundaries for England. He goes again, but it’s into the air and Hazlewood parries the ball away from the boundary.

10 runs from the over.

England 148-4 (33) Stokes 62, Ali 18, Hazlewood 0-24 (6)

Hazlewood has come back on to bowl, and there is little sign of the risk taking of the previous overs from Stokes.

Moeen Ali drives Hazlewood back down the ground for a boundary, six from the over.

England 146-4 (32) Stokes 61, Ali 13, Head 0-28 (5)

Head will continue, his first four overs have been good, just 20 runs from it. And Stokes has gone for it again!

Head has been launched over the rope for another maximum, Stokes has been absorbing pressure, but has just started to put it back on the opposition.

Eight runs from the over, that’s a bit more like it from England.

Stokes 50! England 138-4 (31) Ali 12, Starc 2-45 (8)

England are just hanging in there, but the runs are starting to become a bit hard to come by.

Starc is back on, and he has brought up his 50 with a huge hit into the stands! That was launched!

England 128-4 (30) Stokes 46, Ali 11, Head 0-20 (4)

Head has come back on and England might have to start going after him, but they haven’t yet, just four runs from the over.

England 125-4 (29) Stokes 44, Ali 10, Starc 2-35 (7)

David Warner makes a sprawling dive to stop Stokes picking up another boundary. The outfield is getting quicker.

Starc has come back on as Australia hunt for another wicket.

England 119-4 (28) Stokes 41, Ali 7, Zampa 1-14 (6)

Zampa starts his over with two wides. The required run rate is up over seven an over, but I don’t think England will be worrying about it too much at the moment.

Just the one run from the bat in the over, Zampa is bowling quick and flat, but England cannot find any gaps.

England 116-4 (27) Stokes 41, Ali 6, Cummins 1-24 (6)

Moeen Ali has his first boundary, but it’s flown off the edge, that was not necessarily a deliberate shot, but England might take any run they can get.

The second one is a thicker edge, almost identical to the first, but that one is close enough for third man to field.
