England’s World Cup nightmare continued as their miniscule mathematical hopes of staying in the competition were finally extinguished by bitter rivals Australia.

After five defeats from their first six games the defending champions had long since given up hope of reaching the semi-finals, but officially bowing out at the hands of their Ashes foes with a 33-run defeat simply poured salt into open wounds.

Once again it was their batting that let them down, failing to get to grips with a manageable target after a spirited showing from the bowling unit left Australia 286 all out in the final over.

England were knocked over for 253 in response, Ben Stokes top-scoring with 64 but unable to pull his side out of the fire.

Hazlewood will bowl here, and Rashid has hit a boundary! He fires that over the top towards the boundary and the fielder in the deep can’t get there.

Seven runs from the over.

Wicket! Willey out for 15! ct Zampa b Hazlewood - England 216-8

Willey hits Hazlewood to the boundary at the start of the next over!

He tries to follow it up with another big hit but doesn’t quite get hold of it and it loops up in the air, Zampa makes a stunning run and catch to dismiss the all rounder.

England 212-7 (43) Woakes 15, Willey 11, Starc 2-66 (10)

Woakes has driven Starc away for four! That was a lovely drive through extra cover to the boundary.

This will also be Starc’s last over.

And Woakes has another boundary from the final ball.

England 198-7 (41) Woakes 6, Willey 9, Starc 2-55 (9)

Starc has been brought back on to try and find the required breakthroughs for Australia, but Willey has timed one perfectly and struck the ball to the boundary.

Willey is playing well having only just come to the crease.

England 182-6 (39) Ali 42, Woakes 5, Cummins 2-36 (8)

Ali has another boundary, it might have come off the glove, but it takes it very fine over the keeper and he moves inot the 40s.

Nine runs from the over, after Woakes scored his first boundary from the final ball.

England 177-6 (38) Ali 37, Woakes 1, Zampa 2-19 (8)

Zampa has been so impressive in this match so far, and every delivery looks like it could be dangerous.

He did not start the tournament well, and neither did Australia, but they have found their footing towards the key stages of the tournament and are on course to qualify for the semi-finals.

Wicket! Livingstone out for 2! ct Abbott b Cummins

Livingstone top-scored with 27 against India, but like most of England’s batters, has not really performed at the level that he should during the tournament.

Cummins has brought himself back on to have a go at the new batter and the plan has worked!

Livingstone has smashed that but Abbott takes the catch and he has gone for just two runs.
