Bitterly cold temperatures are swept the UK on Friday, alongside heavy snowfall, ice and freezing fog, particularly in western England.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice were in place across parts of the UK, with overnight temperatures falling to almost -13C in Scotland.

An update on cancelled flights.

The Independent's Simon Calder has calculated that British Airways has cancelled 100 flights today – mostly short-haul, but also including flights to Los Angeles and San Jose.

Separately, he reports that Swiss Air has cancelled Geneva and Zurich round trips, and an Air Canada flight to Toronto has been grounded.

If you're flying today, check with your airline before travel.
