Jon Jones says he ‘only sparred three times’ before Ciryl Gane heavyweight victory at UFC 285

Jon Jones submitted Ciryl Gane in the first round to win the vacant heavyweight title in the main event of UFC 285.

Jones had not fought in three years, but the former two-time light-heavyweight champion showed very few signs of ring rust, as he took down Gane early and forced the Frenchman to tap out to a guillotine choke.

Jones, 35, is seen by many as the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, though the American’s career has also been marred by numerous failed drug tests and run-ins with the law. He once again proved his talents here, however, requiring just two minutes to beat former interim champion Gane, 32, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

In the co-main event, Alexa Grasso stunned Valentina Shevchenko with a fourth-round submission to win the women’s flyweight belt and hand her opponent a first loss in six years. With that result, Grasso became the first female Mexican champion in UFC history. She also became the third active Mexican champion, with Brandon Moreno currently holding the men’s flyweight belt and Yair Rodriguez serving as interim men’s featherweight champion.

Re-live updates and results from the UFC 285 main card and prelims, below. The card aired live on BT Sport in the UK, with the broadcaster’s app and website also streaming the fights. In the US, ESPN+ streamed the action live, as did the UFC’s Fight Pass.

Lots of boos for Gane, who is just the loveliest guy you’ll ever meet. Cheers for Jones.

Jones is about to enter the Octagon, but he’s being asked to take some tape off his toe – a toe that he’s injured before.

Not what you want, right before you enter the ring... but Jones seems okay about it.

Gane is out first, to the sound of boos, before Jones makes his entrance.

Jones looks a little nervous, but this is a man who has never lost – in a sense.

At 26-1 (1 No Contest), “Bones”’ sole loss was a controversial disqualification.

Gane is 11-1 in mixed martial arts, having suffered his first pro defeat last year when he was outpointed by Francis Ngannou. But Gane bounced back from that result, with which he failed to upgrade himself from interim champion to undisputed, with a stoppage of Tai Tuivasa in September.

At 32, the Frenchman is still new to the sport but has advanced very quickly, in part due to his slick striking and rare speed for his size.

Ngannou, an ex-teammate of Gane, left the UFC this January and relinquished the heavyweight title to set up tonight’s main event.

What if Jones loses tonight, as he finally tries to become a two-weight champion?

Here’s our main-event preview:

What if Jon Jones loses at UFC 285?

The former light-heavyweight champion returns to the ring after three years away, challenging Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight title

Jon Jones, now 35 and returning after three years away, became the youngest champion in UFC history at the age of 23 in 2011.

The American, seen by many as the best ever, is a former two-time light heavyweight title holder and has 14 title fight wins – the most ever in the UFC.

However, he was twice stripped of that belt – once after being arrested and once due to a positive drug test – and he was also stripped of the interim title due to a failed drug test.

His title defence against Alexander Gustafsson in 2018 was marred by another failed drug test, and he has had numerous run-ins with the law.
